Calgary Children's Dentistry
Happy visits, healthy little smiles
Written by the Rideau Dental on 4th Street team. Reviewed by Dr. Janet Kan. Last updated October 2026.
Your child’s first visit
A first visit is usually short and relaxed. We focus on helping your child feel comfortable: meeting the team, sitting in the chair, asking questions and letting us gently peek in their mouth.
Depending on your child’s age and comfort level, the visit may include an exam, a cleaning and a chat with you about brushing, diet and habits.
A common guideline is to book a first visit around the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth. Early visits are mostly about comfort and prevention.

Familiar faces for the whole family
We are a small, non-corporate practice. Your family sees Dr. Kan and the same team at every visit, so we get to know each child and their needs over time. Booking family members together can also make scheduling easier.
Our office has a dedicated kids area, so younger patients have something fun to do while they wait. Small details like this help make the dentist a familiar, comfortable place.
If your child has a toothache, a chipped or knocked-out tooth, or swelling, call us as soon as possible. We offer emergency appointments when available.

Frequently asked questions about children’s dentistry in Calgary
When should my child first see a dentist?
A common guideline is to book a first visit around the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth. Early visits are mostly about comfort and prevention.
How can I prepare my child for their visit?
Keep it positive and simple. Avoid words like hurt or needle, and let them know the dentist will count and check their teeth.
What are dental sealants?
Sealants are a thin protective coating painted onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth. They help keep food and bacteria out of deep grooves where cavities often start.
What if my child is nervous?
That is completely normal. We go slowly, explain everything in simple words and never rush. Short, positive visits help children build confidence over time.
How often should children see the dentist?
Many children do well with a check-up every six months. Dr. Kan will recommend a schedule based on your child and their risk of cavities.
Are children's visits covered?
Many private plans and CDCP include coverage for children's preventive care. We can help you check your benefits.
