Dr. Janet Kan and the Rideau Dental team will first identify the source of your pain, explain what they find and discuss the available treatment options. Our immediate priority is to relieve your discomfort and prevent the problem from getting worse.
Calling early may give us more options to save a damaged tooth, control an infection or complete a simpler repair.
Should I go to
the emergency room?
Call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department if you have:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Rapidly increasing facial or neck swelling
- Uncontrolled or heavy bleeding
- A suspected broken jaw
- A serious injury to your face or head
- Loss of consciousness or other signs of a medical emergency
Hospital emergency departments can address life-threatening symptoms and serious trauma. Most toothaches, broken teeth, lost fillings, and dental infections still require follow-up treatment from a dentist.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Call our Calgary dental office if you experience:
- A severe or persistent toothache
- A broken, cracked or chipped tooth
- A knocked-out or loosened permanent tooth
- Facial or gum swelling
- A dental abscess or signs of infection
- Bleeding that does not stop
- A broken crown, bridge or dental restoration

What should you do during a dental emergency?
Knocked-out permanent tooth
Pick up the tooth by the crown, which is the part normally visible above the gums. Do not touch or scrub the root.
If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently without removing any attached tissue. Try to place it back in its socket without forcing it. If that is not possible, keep it moist in milk or inside your cheek and call us immediately.
Time matters. The sooner a knocked-out tooth is treated, the greater the chance that it may be saved.
Broken or chipped tooth
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and save any pieces you can find. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek if there is swelling.
Avoid chewing on the affected side and call us for an assessment, especially if the tooth hurts or has a sharp edge.
Toothache
Rinse with warm water and floss gently around the affected tooth to remove trapped food. Do not place aspirin directly against the tooth or gums.
Call us if the pain is severe, persistent, affecting your sleep or accompanied by swelling.
Swelling or a possible dental abscess
Swelling can indicate an infection that requires prompt treatment. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face and call us as soon as possible.
Do not try to drain or puncture the swollen area yourself.
Lost filling or broken crown
Avoid chewing on the affected tooth and save the crown or restoration if you can find it. Do not use household glue to put it back in place.
Call us so we can protect the tooth and determine whether the restoration can be repaired or replaced.
