Frequently asked questions about TMJ treatment in Calgary
What is TMJ disorder?
The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of your ears. TMJ disorder is a general term for pain or problems in these joints and the muscles that move your jaw, often linked to clenching, grinding, muscle tension or bite stress.
What is the difference between a night guard and a splint?
Both are custom appliances. A night guard mainly protects your teeth from clenching and grinding while you sleep. A splint is designed more specifically around your bite and jaw symptoms. Dr. Kan will recommend the right option after your assessment.
Can I use a store-bought mouthguard instead?
Over-the-counter guards do not fit precisely and are not adjusted to your bite. A custom appliance is made from impressions of your teeth and fine-tuned by Dr. Kan, so it fits comfortably and stays in place.
Can Botox help with jaw pain?
For some patients, especially those who clench strongly, Botox in the jaw muscles can relax overactive muscles and reduce tension and soreness. Dr. Kan will let you know whether it is a good fit for you.
What can I do at home to ease jaw pain?
Notice and relax daytime clenching, avoid gum and very hard or chewy foods during flare-ups, and apply warm compresses to sore muscles. We will share practical tips you can start right away.
Is TMJ treatment covered by insurance?
Coverage for night guards and splints varies by plan. We accept CDCP and private insurance, and we will give you a clear estimate before treatment so you can check your coverage.
