Calgary Dental Exams and Cleanings
Healthy smiles start with prevention
Written by the Rideau Dental on 4th Street team. Reviewed by Dr. Janet Kan. Last updated October 2026.
Why regular check-ups matter
Most dental problems start quietly. Early decay, gum inflammation and worn or cracked fillings usually do not hurt until they have progressed. Regular visits let us catch these changes while they are small, simple and less costly to treat.
They also give you a chance to ask questions and get practical advice you can actually use at home.
Many patients do well with a check-up and cleaning every six months. Some benefit from more frequent visits, for example if they have a history of gum disease, and some can safely space visits further apart. Dr. Kan will recommend a schedule that fits your mouth and your history.
What your visit includes
Complete Exam
Professional Cleaning
Oral Cancer Screening
Prevention-focused coaching
Every mouth is different. We tailor home-care tips to you, whether that is a better flossing technique, help with sensitivity, guidance on acidic foods and drinks, or advice for protecting your teeth if you clench or grind.
With early appointments Monday to Thursday, it is easier to come in before work. Staying consistent with prevention is one of the best investments you can make in your long-term dental health.
Have not seen a dentist in years? There is no judgement here. We start with a gentle exam, explain what we find and help you prioritise next steps.

Frequently asked questions about dental exams and cleanings in Calgary
Do dental cleanings hurt?
Most patients find cleanings comfortable. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, tell your hygienist. We can adjust our technique and go at your pace.
Do I need X-rays at every visit?
No. X-rays are recommended based on your risk and history. Some patients need them more often than others, and we will always explain why we suggest them.
How often should I have a check-up?
Many patients do well every six months. Dr. Kan may suggest more frequent visits if you have a history of gum disease, or a longer interval if your mouth stays healthy.
Is a check-up covered by insurance?
Most dental plans include routine exams and cleanings. We accept CDCP and private insurance and can help you understand your coverage before your visit.
I have not seen a dentist in years. Is that okay?
Absolutely. There is no judgement here. We will start with a gentle exam, explain what we find and help you prioritise next steps.
What happens if you find a problem?
Dr. Kan explains what she sees, shows you on X-rays or photos when helpful and talks through your options and costs. Nothing is done without your agreement.
