Canadian Dental Care Plan patients welcome
Using CDCP at a neighbourhood clinic
At our clinic, using CDCP looks much like any other appointment. You tell us you’re a CDCP member when you book, bring your member details, and we check your coverage before we start. We send the CDCP claim to Sun Life for you, so at the visit you pay only your share: your co-payment, if you have one, any difference between our fee and the CDCP fee, and anything the plan doesn’t cover. Before treatment, Dr. Janet Kan or our front desk will tell you which parts of the plan are expected to be covered and which aren’t, so the bill isn’t a surprise.
A quick note on how we handle other insurance: for private plans, Rideau is a non-assignment clinic, which means you pay at the visit and claim it back from your insurer. CDCP works differently. The plan reimburses dental offices directly rather than patients, so you shouldn’t be asked to pay the full cost of a covered service up front. We send your CDCP claims to Sun Life ourselves.
What CDCP can cover here
- Checkups, exams and x-rays, plus cleanings and polishing
- Sealants and other preventive care for kids, through our children’s dentistry visits
- Tooth-coloured fillings and dental bonding for chipped or worn teeth
- Root canal treatment on front teeth and premolars (molar root canals are usually referred to a specialist)
- Extractions
- Crowns, which need Sun Life’s approval first (preauthorization). If a bridge is part of your plan, we’ll check with Sun Life before treatment.
- Partial dentures, which also need preauthorization
- Emergency visits for pain, swelling or a broken tooth
Some treatments aren’t part of CDCP. Cosmetic work like teeth whitening and veneers isn’t covered, and the government lists orthodontic services, which would include Invisalign, as “currently not available.” We’re happy to do those treatments, but we’ll quote them as private-pay before anything starts.
What you’ll pay with CDCP
Under $70,000
$70,000 to $79,999
$80,000 to $89,999
Alberta programs that work alongside CDCP
- Dental Assistance for Seniors, for Albertans 65 and older under an income limit, with up to $5,000 of coverage every five years
- Alberta Child Health Benefit, for children in lower-income households (up to 18, or 18 to 19 if living at home and in high school)
- Alberta Adult Health Benefit, for lower-income adults who are pregnant or have high ongoing prescription needs
- AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped) health benefits
We bill Alberta Blue Cross as the second payer for all of these, so you don’t have to send that claim yourself.

Frequently asked questions about CDCP in Calgary
Do you accept CDCP at Rideau Dental on 4th Street?
Yes. We see patients covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan, including new patients. Mention CDCP when you book and bring your member ID, a piece of ID, your coverage start date and your co-payment level.
Will I have to pay anything with CDCP?
It depends on your co-payment level and the treatment. With adjusted family net income under $70,000 there's no co-payment on CDCP's set fee, but you may still pay for services CDCP doesn't cover or where our fee is above CDCP's. We'll tell you before treatment.
Do I pay up front and claim CDCP myself?
No. CDCP reimburses dental offices, not patients, so you shouldn't pay the full cost of a covered service up front. We send your claim to Sun Life, and you pay only your share at the visit.
Does CDCP cover crowns, bridges or dentures?
Crowns and partial dentures can be covered, but they need preauthorization from Sun Life first. Our front desk sends the request, and we wait for approval before starting that work. If you need a bridge, we'll check how CDCP treats it before we plan it. Full dentures are referred out to another provider.
Does CDCP cover Invisalign or whitening?
No. Orthodontic services are listed as currently not available under CDCP, and cosmetic treatments like whitening and veneers aren't covered. We can give you a private-pay estimate.
Can my kids use CDCP here?
Yes, children under 18 can be covered under CDCP, and we see kids for checkups, cleanings, sealants and fillings. Some families also have the Alberta Child Health Benefit, which can be combined with CDCP.
What are your hours for CDCP appointments?
CDCP appointments are booked like any other: Monday and Tuesday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Wednesday 7:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We're closed Friday to Sunday.
I haven't applied yet. Can you help?
We can't apply for you, but you can apply online at canada.ca/dental or by calling Service Canada at 1-833-537-4342. Once you have your approval letter and start date, call us to book.
